Cycling in Kokshetau

Shokan Ualikhanov Kokshetau University
The Bike Rental Service project aims to provide a convenient and accessible bicycle rental service to the students and staff of Shakarim University in Kokshetau, promote sustainable transportation, improve mobility on campus, and encourage a healthier lifestyle among the university community.

The project addresses the following problems:
Environmental Pollution from Vehicles: The increasing number of vehicles is contributing to environmental pollution. According to statistics, vehicle emissions account for 25% of total emissions, reaching up to 50% in some regions during the summer. This pollution negatively impacts the environment and public health.

Low Physical Activity among Students: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the issue of low physical activity among university students. A sociological survey revealed a 35% decrease in physical activity among students compared to 2018. This sedentary lifestyle can lead to various health problems.

Lack of Environmental Awareness and Culture among Students: The project aims to promote bicycle transportation as a means to foster environmental consciousness and culture among students. By popularizing cycling, the project aims to instill a sense of responsibility towards the environment and encourage sustainable transportation choices.

Proposed Solution:
The proposed solution to address these problems is to establish cycling infrastructure in the five campuses of Shakarim University. Equipped bicycle parking areas and a bike rental service will be provided, allowing university staff and students to use both personal and rented bicycles. Bicycles offer an environmentally friendly alternative to motorized transportation, particularly for short distances between the university campuses (3-5 km). This initiative will increase physical activity among students and contribute to the development of environmental awareness and culture by promoting cycling as a preferred mode of transportation.
